The bowls have a hole in the side, to peak at the inside & maybe help hold with your thumb. The reasons for these openings are in equal part function & aesthetics, depending on what you use the vessel for. The bowls are functional-ie salt/sugar bowl, bud bowl, sipping bowl, but also can be purely decorative.

There are many steps in producing these bowls, from creating the forms, refining the pieces as they dry, first firing which turns them from clay to ceramic, glazing & re-firing to a high temperature of 1265 degrees to create a strong, non porous form, which is fully functional if so required. Although these are strong pieces I would recommend hand washing.
